REEL MAINTENANCE

How to Maintain Your Fishing Reel

Keeping your fishing reel in top condition is essential for smooth performance and longevity. Regular maintenance ensures your reel runs effortlessly, giving you the best experience on the water.

Follow these simple step-by-step instructions to clean, oil, and grease your reel properly—without overdoing it. With just a few minutes of care, you’ll keep your reel spinning freely and performing at its best.

Let’s get started!

STEP 1: Taking The Spool Off

On the centre hub of the reel, you'll see two latches. The larger one is the spool release latch (shown in the photo).

To remove the spool:

  1. Pull the spool release latch outward, towards the rim of the spool.
  2. Gently pull the spool away from the backplate.

STEP 2: ADDING THE OIL

Now that the spool is off, follow these steps to keep your reel running smoothly:

  1. Clean the spindle – Use a soft cloth to wipe away any dirt or debris.
  2. Apply the oil – Add 2 or 3 drops of J.W. Young & Sons Ltd Centrepin oil to the spindle (as shown in the photo).
  3. Important for Trupin reels – Only use 2 drops! Too much oil can flood the spindle and stop the reel from working properly.

STEP 4: SPINDLE GREASE

  1. Apply a tiny amount of grease to the slot at the top of the spindle.
  2. DO NOT put grease down the spindle shaft—only in the slot!
  3. Too much grease will make the reel sluggish and affect its performance.

Less is best! Keep it light for smooth operation.

STEP 5: Reassemble & Ready to Go!

  1. Put the spool back on by aligning it with the backplate and gently pressing it into place.
  2. Secure it by making sure the spool release latch clicks back into position.
  3. That’s it—your reel is now properly maintained and ready to use!
